HOW TO LIVE ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS? Making new paper from old paper: A group of visitors in the environmental education centre in Indonesia receives a lesson in recycling. Full view

Pursuing a sustainable lifestyle is already popular in Switzerland. However, in Indonesia, the knowledge on this subject is still in its infancy. With the aim to show the Indonesian population the importance of this topic, we support local partners and with them several environmental education centres. One of these is the «PPLH Bohorok» in Sumatra.

The main topics of the environmental education Bohorok are the rainforest as a habitat and a sustainable lifestyle. The local population (especially school classes and companies), as well as foreign visitors, are educated about medicinal plants, composting, urban gardening, alternative energy sources, biological agriculture or the value of the rainforest. An Eco-Farm an EcoLodge also belong to the centre. The farm produces organic vegetables, which are sold to the Lodge and other customers. The lodge itself accommodates overnighting guests. It is a «profit centre», as its return cross-finances the environmental education programme. In addition, the EcoLodge promotes the development of a socially and environmentally sustainable tourism and creates for the local population.
