Berg am Irchel Bird of Prey Sanctuary<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many kestrels and red kites, as well as rare owls such as a scops owl and a little owl, were nursed back to health last year. The team was able to inspire 2,346 people on 130 privately booked or publicly advertised guided tours, workshops and release events. Numerous school classes also visited the sanctuary. We were particularly pleased that our Ural owl breeding pair Strixi and Sidra hatched five eggs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This scops owl was found in Kilchberg \/ ZH on 22 May 2024 and brought to the bird of prey sanctuary by the Pf\u00f6tli animal rescue service. After a thorough examination, it was found to be generally weak, but it also had a parasite infestation in its left eye. She was successfully treated at the sanctuary.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Thurauen Nature Centre<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March 2024, we opened the special exhibition \u00abWow, a Kingfisher!\u00bb and in April we were able to inaugurate the new Thurauen adventure trail, which was funded by the #hallowasser project. More than 13,300 people visited the Nature Centre in 2024. On 93 guided tours and workshops, we introduced groups and families to the Thurauen and inspired 184 school classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orangutan conservation programme<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In total, the team at the quarantine and rehabilitation centre looked after 56 animals in 2024. We released 20 orangutans into the wild. In July, the Jantho rangers spotted the orangutan Wenda with offspring. We have observed only seven babies born by orangutans that were released into the wild, so this was very good news. The destruction caused by the landslides at the quarantine and rehabilitation centre at the end of November affected us all greatly. The rapid and generous financial, logistical and mental support from all sides made it possible for the centre to become operational again after only a short time. Great progress was made last year in the environmental education centres and other programmes to protect the rainforests and endangered species and to improve the living conditions of local communities in the Leuser, Batang Toru and Ulu Masen ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 19 July, the Orangutan Conservation Programme team spotted Wenda, a female orangutan, with a baby she was holding carefully as she climbed in the trees not far from them.
