Staff spotted Bulan carrying her infant in the treetops when they were monitoring the protected forest. The baby was around one month old at the time and appeared to be in good health. \u201cBulan looked alert and was protecting her infant. The baby seemed healthy and remained in close contact with its mother throughout the observation period,\u201d said Hafiz, head of the orangutan reintroduction centre in Jantho.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/paneco.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Badar.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/paneco.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Badar.jpg 800w, https:\/\/paneco.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Badar-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>The young orangutan was named Badar, which means \u2018bright full moon\u2019 in Indonesian.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>From a victim of the illegal wildlife trade to a mother in the wild<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bulan was rescued from the illegal wildlife trade in Aceh, in northern Sumatra, in December 2014 when she was around two years old. After four years in the care of the SOCP orangutan Quarantine and Rehabilitation Centre in Sibolangit, North Sumatra, SOCP\u2019s vets released her back into the wild. His name reflects the hope for the future of this endangered great ape species. The Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) is classified as \u2018critically endangered\u2019 on the IUCN Red List. Habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as illegal wildlife trade, threaten the species throughout its entire remaining range.
