These form structures that are essential, particularly for the three blind residents, to enable them to move around safely and keep their sense of direction. Their food is distributed across the islands to encourage them to climb and venture out each day.

Dina is always up for a generous portion of fresh leaves.

Dina is the youngest at the Haven. She lost her eyesight as a result of encephalitis. By now she has settled in well, but she would be delighted to have a companion. An attempt to allow the occasional direct encounter with Krismon failed because of the male. Krismon, who is considerably older, was frightened of her, which is why the attempt was abandoned.

Krismon was severely traumatised by his long captivity.

Krismon has not yet been able to fully regain his self-confidence. However, he climbs the ropes to the highest platforms with great enthusiasm in search of food. As soon as he finds something, though, he usually disappears into his enclosure.

In general, the orangutans get on well with visitor groups. Only Fahzren gets nervous when visitors make a lot of noise and too many cameras are pointed at him. He grew up amongst people in Malaysia and was rescued from an illegal breeding operation and now he is much more relaxed than he ever was at the Quarantine and Rehabilitation Centre.

Our sponsored animal, Lewis, has also been given a more dignified life at Orangutan Haven than he would have had behind bars in a conventional enclosure. The adult orangutan is completely blind but enjoys the opportunity to climb to the highest point on his island. He sometimes spends the whole day there.

Find out more about the Orangutan Haven

Three years ago, the first orangutans moved into the Haven on Sumatra.
