World Orangutan Day in Indonesia
19 August – Orangutan Haven near Medan
Talk shows and campaign calls for the protection of orangutans: More than 170 students from Satya Terra Bhinneka University took part in various activities and attached messages for the protection of orangutans to a tree of hope.

19 August – Singkil, North Sumatra
YEL, together with the Aceh Singkil district government in Sumatra, organised various environmental education activities. These were attended by Deputy Regent Hamzah Sulaiman, several department heads, community leaders and hundreds of students. It was a lively celebration with a painting competition, poems and an environmental discussion on the theme ‘Love the orangutans! – One nature, one hope.’

19 August – Blankpidie in south-western Aceh
In Blankpidie, Orangutan Day was celebrated as a community event for children, young people and adults. It was organised in collaboration with local partner organisations, volunteers and the authorities. Activities included an exhibition, a walk, a bazaar, a talk show and educational and interactive games.
20 August – Medan
Nature conservation talk & coffee: In a relaxed atmosphere, representatives from YEL and the North Sumatra BBKSDA nature conservation authorities discussed the protection of orangutans with visitors in a public café in downtown Medan.

24 August – Family Fun Walk in Medan
Over 300 people took part in various activities organised by YEL in collaboration with the city government on Car-Free Day in the city of Medan, which has a population of five million. In addition to a traditional dance performance from Aceh Besar Jantho, people could enjoy aerobics exercises, a quiz and a fun family parade.





28 August – Bohorok Environmental Education Centre, Bukit Lawang
Schoolchildren of various ages took part in the orangutan theatre competition at the PPLH Bohorok Environmental Education Centre. Face painting, dancing, costumes, performances and fine food were all part of a varied day with the environmental education team.
