Role models for their peers, their family and the whole village

One of the proud ambassadors is Gilang Arif Nasution (picture on the right). Together with his fellow students he acts as a role model at his school. The ambassadors will educate a new generation of nature respecting young people during their two-year term of office. To achieve this, they will organize various campaigns on environmental issues. They will not only support environmental protection at school, but also in their families and within the village community.

«There are so many different ways to protect nature. Our ambassadors all have individual skills which they can use on their mission.

Some are good at giving talks, others write beautiful texts or paint great posters. Together, they actively help to sensitize both young and adult people to nature conservation.»
Mira from the Bohorok environmental education team and team leader of the nature ambassadors

How do you become a nature ambassador?

Fifty schools from several villages in the region around our environmental education centre PPLH Bohorok took part in a competition to select 15 ambassadors out of a total of 2500 pupils. They all wanted to win the coveted title! After some input from our environmental education team and with the help of the teachers, everyone took part in a quiz. The best answers led to the first selection of one hundred candidates. These were invited to the Leuser National Park on a study trip. They also visited our environmental education centre where they received an introduction in waste management. During the selection process, they learned a lot about biodiversity, environmentally friendly agriculture and the many benefits of recycling.

After the study trip, they took part in a 30-day ‘Earthkeeping’ competition where they had to complete various tasks. Afterwards the candidates submited their individual reports with photo and video evidence to the PPLH Bohorok for the final selection. Our environmental education team then chose the authors of the fifteen best reports as nature conservation ambassadors. Over the next two years these will have to use their imagination and drive to inspire as many people as possible to support nature conservation. Good luck!
